Allan says: “MD2MD meetings are a regular chance to spend time working ON my business not just IN it. The mutual trust and support helps everyone’s business get better.”
Before Wilson Partners, Allan worked in the City for UBS, Deutsche Bank and Credit Suisse as an accountant in their trading businesses.
Having always had the ambition to have his own business, Allan left the City to start a Chartered Accountancy and business advisory firm in the Thames Valley. In February 2008, alongside his brother Chris who had been with Ernst & Young’s corporate finance team, they opened the doors of Wilson Partners! Wilson Partners Ltd is now a team of 9, growing quickly and targetting an annual turnover of £1m by the time the London Olympics are upon us (its 2012 gold medal aim!).
As well as being the MD of the firm, Allan is responsible for sales and marketing. The company now has 4 director shareholders in the business with the aim to solve CEO headaches for “businesses on a mission”. Allan and his team pro-actively advise owner-managed businesses on profitability, growth, cash and risk mitigation through their expertise in accountancy, tax, corporate finance and strategic advisory work.
For continued growth, the company is targeting larger businesses (£2m – £20m turnover) as well as building additional service lines such as financial services (IFA) and an audit function. They are also keen to build real value in the business through differentiating themselves from the competition and having great processes and systems in place.
Wilson Partners was announced as the 2011 Best General Tax Practice in the UK at the Taxation Awards, beating off stiff opposition from the two other shortlisted firms.
There were a number of things about Wilson Partners that impressed the judges:
- Very rapid growth in a short period of time.
- Strong technical tax skills beyond what would be expected in a firm of their size.
- The use of technology so that the firm is paperless with all post scanned as it comes in.
- Articles written in the professional press.
- Creation of computer models to help decision making, for example on incorporating or taking a company car.
Head of tax, Alan Ross said: “Although we are already recognised in the local area for our tax skills, to be recognised by the profession as a whole is a great honour and we look forward to continued growth from our base in Maidenhead. A big thank you also goes to our clients and contacts, without whom an award like this would not be possible.”
MD2MD never fails to give me valuable and new ideas – this allows me to really differentiate myself and increase my effectiveness and confidence as MD of the business. Having a group of fellow MDs that usually share the same excitement, ambitions and challenges as you do and being able to learn from them is also a big benefit. As with any group filled with great people, the power of the network often creates opportunities for me to add value to my business and the businesses of my clients.
